Mar 21, 2013Use ER70S6 filler and just weld it as if it were standard low carbon steel. If the weldment was all 4130, and you were going to heat treat it fully afterwards, then 4130 filler could be used. Normally you would use either ER70s-2 Or what you mentioned ER80s-d2. The 70 and 80 stands for the tensile strength in thousands. Both are a mild steel rod but work well on 4130.
Feb 20, 2009The ER70S-3 or an ER80S-D2 is great for mild steel. You could use a 312 SS filler for your 4130 if you had to. I prefer the ER70S-2 or ER80S-D2 for roll cage applications because of their ability to flex better under a crash yet have great strength too. You might try a TigTectic 680 rod.5 Common Types Of Welding Filler Rods - PowerNationIf youre welding different types of metal or need a nicer weld, the TIG welder comes into play. And for that, you need filler rod. The ER70S-6 is for mild steel. Its the most common type of filler rod found in an automotive shop and is great for sheet metal, chassis, and suspension components.Best welding rod (tig) for welding 4130 chromoly tubing Filler rod suggestions needed Mild steel to 4130 WeldingThe ER rods are designed for the arc welding processes (the E stands for electrode and can be used to carry current as in the MIG, or GMAW process). Will the filler rod you have work on mild steel or chromoly? Yes. Is it the best choice?
However, the MIG welding process, which uses filler, is most preferred when welding stainless steel to dissimilar metals, such as mild steel. So, thats it about welding stainless steel to mild steel. Preheat is generally not needed for thinner sections (0.120-in), but for tubing larger than 0.120 a 300F-400F preheat is needed to obtain acceptable results. A common filler metal choice for welding chrome-moly is ER80S-D2 .This filler metal is capable of producing welds that approximate the strength of the 4130.
Jan 26, 2012I recently ran out of tig rods and have around 10 lbs of gas welding rods. So I had a little project out of steel that needed some filler rod so I did a little test. Here is what I found. Do not use gas welding rods for tig. You will get porous welds with lots of pits and a very weak weld.Filler Metals - Lincoln Electricrestraint, position of welding, condition of the steel, and service conditions. In TIG welding, you feed the filler rod into the molten puddle by hand. Your choice of filler rod is extremely important as the rod must correctly match the alloy of the material you will be welding. know you cannot weld 4130 to mild steel. The main reason is that when you mig 4130 it superheats it and cools too fast and you get micro cracks that will get detected in the inspection process. Plus of course if you do have an unfortunate accident it will shear the chome moly off the mild steel and be more useless than tinfoil.MIG welding 4130 - Miller Welding Discussion ForumsOne of the main reasons the 4130 is mainly tig welded and most experts agree, the transfer of a mig weld to 4130 is more harsh and quicker than a tig weld. The "short arc" transfer with 4130 creates a possibility of more embritlement along the weld. With tig, the basemetal is heated first and already at a molten state before filler is added.Raw 4130 race car rust?Jan 26, 2013what filler rod to use when welding to my pitman arm and spindles.Oct 19, 2010Tig Filler Rod?Dec 14, 2009Pre-Pump Fuel Filter- 100 micron or 40 micron???May 19, 2009See more resultsFiller Rod HTP America - USA WeldER80S-D2 is recommended for welding 4130 chrome moly tubing if a higher strength, less ductile weld is required. Aug 14, 2019SAE 4130 - AISI 4130. SAE4130 is a low alloy, copper-coated wire designed for the welding of heat-treatable, low alloy steels such as the SAE / AISI 4100 or 8630 series, as well as steel castings with similar hardening characteristics. A pre-heat of 300°F - 350°F is required for some of the higher carbon grades to prevent cracking.TIG Filler Rod For Mild Steel - Weld Talk Message BoardsMy favorite, however, for thin sheet or thin tube welds is Silicon Bronze TIG Filler. The AWS classification is ERCuSi-A. It conforms to AWS Spec A5.7-84. Sold most everywhere. As welded tensile strength of 50Ksi, versus 70Ksi for the 70-S2. Nicer to work with, as the melt temp and freeze temp are lower than mild steel.TIG Welding Chrome-Moly Tubing - lincolnelectricA. Some fabricators prefer to use austenitic stainless steel fillers to weld 4130 tubing. This is acceptable provided 310 or 312 stainless steel fillers are used. Other stainless steel fillers can cause cracking. Stainless filler material is typically more expensive. Q. Do I need to heat treat (stress relieve) 4130 after welding?
